Directed evolutionary engineering of the non-mevalonate pathway for efficient terpenoid production as aroma ingredients.

In the production of terpenoids, which are aroma ingredients, by plants, the non-mevalonate pathway is an important metabolic pathway, just like the well-known mevalonate pathway. In this study, we identified a key enzyme in the non-mevalonate pathway and successfully enhanced its enzymatic activity by evolutionary engineering with Chiba University and Waseda University, resulting in the efficient production of terpenoids. This result is expected to be applied in the development of aroma ingredients using bio-production.
